Fourth Grade Library Lesson
4th Grade ELA Kentucky Academic Standard:
- Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.

Objective:
- Given the definition of a literary genre, the students will identify the correct term to go with the definition.
- Given a literary genre, the students will identify the characteristics of that genre.
- Given examples of a variety of books, the students will choose the correct books that meet the characteristics of their assigned genre.
Materials:
- Literary Genre Presentation
- Poster paper
- Book club flyers and old book catalogs.
- Book bins that are genre specific
- Markers
- Scissors
- Glue

Procedure:
- The instructor will introduce the lesson using the Literary Genre Google Slides Presentation on the SmartBoard. This presentation defines genre and identifies and explains the 5 main genres and their subgenres.
- At the end of this presentation, there is a review and practice. Using the SmartBoard and the Google Sheets presentation, have the students answer the review questions about genres and subgenres on a sheet of paper. Go over the answers with the students.
- From there, we will travel to the computer lab and the students will log in and individually play the genre drill and practice computer game on https://www.quia.com/rr/111225.html
- At the next class, review the 5 main genres and the subgenres. Arrange the students into groups of three. Provide each group with a poster paper titled with a specific genre and markers. Each group will have a different genre.
- Each group must write a list of characteristics for their assigned genre on the poster paper
- Students can use the book bins for their genre to help them create their characteristics list.
- Each group then uses a flyer or old book order catalog to cut out and glue pictures of books that fall under their genre.
- Each group will come up and present their poster, literary genre, the characteristics of their literary genre that they listed, and why they chose the books that they did for their given literary genre.
- Hang up the student posters in the library.
- At the beginning of the next class, review the 5 main genres and their subgenres again. Each group will be a team and compete against each other in the instructional game of Genre Review Game Jeopardy. The game will be displayed on the SmartBoard in the library.
Closure: Students will work individually to complete and hand in a Genre worksheet.
