Shared Google Docs Lesson Framework
This page contains a library lesson that uses Google Docs with fourth grade students as they develop research skills using an online encyclopedia. This lesson can be adapted and used with Microsoft Word, but the online collaborative nature of Google Docs allows the students to share research information with each other in real time. The collaborative document the students will use can be found at the bottom of this page.
Topic Description:
The students will develop search and research skills as they look up given topics using the Grolier Online Encyclopedia. The students will use the online public library and their library card to access the various features of the New Book of Knowledge through Grolier Online including Facts at a Glance, Table of Contents, Fact Box, Headings, Maps, Atlas, and Dictionaries.

How this lesson asks learners to collaborate using a shared doc:
Each table in the library is a pre-assigned group of five students. The online encyclopedia document will be shared with each group. There are five different topics to research on the document. With their group members, they will decide which topic they will research and begin working. As they find the information, they will type it into the document. When everyone has finished they will look over each other’s answers to be sure they make sense and that nothing was left blank.
